First performance at Paris, March 11, 1867

Time: 1559
Place: Madrid

Another very good opera and performance. Especially good acting from King Philip during his self-pity aria in act 3 (Ella giammai m' amò! : She never loved me! ...Yeah, dude, she was betrothed to your son.)

The plot is a little too complicated, and although this lasts 3 hours, some threads aren't well developed. The ending in particular is very brief and puzzling. The darkness of the scene where Don Carlo has a swordfight is (perhaps deliberately) hard to make out.

Several times I commented to myself that I liked the music, although this doesn't have any "hit" arias that I know of.

All the 6 principals got big applause, with JC getting the biggest of them. But the really big roar was for the director/conductor HvK (b. '08). Amazing that he died in '89.
