When Max makes a preposterous promise to a girl he has a crush on, his chances to fulfilling it seem hopeless when he is dragged onto a cross-country trip with his embarrassing father, Goofy.

This is not bad. Plenty of plot and characterization. Max does come around, but only after a lot of sulking, which is very appropriate to his teen character.
The biggest action scene is the car floating down the Colorado River, then over a waterfall. Then we get a dog that sounds and moves like Michael Jackson as the pop singer whose concert Max said he'd crash - onstage no less.
