A 'pleasantly plump' teenager teaches 1962 Baltimore a thing or two about integration after landing a spot on a local TV dance show.
Director: John Waters
Stars: Ricki Lake, Divine, Jerry Stiller, Sonny Bono, Debbie Harry, Ruth Brown, Michael St. Gerard, Jo Ann Havrilla.
Edward Love ... choreographer
Kiki Shepard ... assistant choreographer
Linda Snyder ... dance consultant
Watched online, ok print.
28 songs in the Soundtracks, none performed by cast members, except that they social danced to them.
I loved the fight-for-integration plot line, but not the 2-girl competition for the car show crown and MS. I liked that RL never broke down once over taunting by mean girls, and that the bigger group supported her.
I'm getting the bends from how fast time is flying because so few music/als were made. This film takes place in 1962, so a generation ago, but I watched '62 films from 16-18Aug; today is 15Oct. I went from original to camp nostalgia in 2 months. I don't have any nostalgia for that style of dancing or hair, but many of the songs were fun.
Weird that the poster has only feet/legs, no hair.
