Great Performances (1971– )
Film of the legendary 1985 concert performance presented by the New York Philharmonic of Stephen Sondheim's classic musical at Avery Fisher Hall at Lincoln Center.
Director: Michael Houldey
Stars: Lee Remick, George Hearn, Barbara Cook, Mandy Patinkin, Elaine Stritch, Carol Burnett, Phyllis Newman, Comden & Green.
No songs in the Soundtracks, but plenty performed.
First performed 1971. This performance was recorded 9'86.
A lot of the film is talking heads and rehearsals. When we get to the performance, it's very edited. I can't tell if they did dialog between the songs, or if they were just trying to make a soundtrack recording. I certainly don't have the feeling I've seen a concert performance of the show.
But the songs are good, and well sung. Broadway Baby (ES) and I'm Still Here (CB) are probably the most famous.
