Watched online, ok print, poor connection. And no subtitles for the German spoken.
9 songs in the Soundtracks. Most of the film had no musical performances.
My rating dates back to 2017-01-24, 8 months before I started this quest of watching American music/als. Today I might give it a 7, but the poor connection and lack of subtitles for German dialog was very frustrating.
I'm surprised at how little I remembered of the details, given it was less than 2 years since the rating date; I'm assuming that's when I watched it.
This is based on the book of the title character, played by AB. Today I balked at the ending, with AB happy and successful in Poland, because it seemed more prevalent that Jews had a hard time resettling there. He lived to age 88 (1911-2000).

Bizarre policy, based on the idea that in 3 generations the dark can be bred out of the half-caste, and meanwhile they can be servants and learn white ways.
OK film, sorta recommended because it's different story of whites oppressing dark-skinned people; here targeting half-aborigines by blood. (They're full by culture.)
However, it's a lot of the girls walking, covering their tracks, finding food and white men trying to find them and failing, even knowing that they're on a particular path.
Not a lot of plot or action here.

Notes: KB & ET married: 8'89-10'95; RSL was the star of Swing Kids ('93).
I like not the plot, despite its similarity to Othello, probably because it makes light of the evil-intended deceptions. I didn't like the priest compounding the deception to redeem Beatrice; Claudio may have been unstable enough to sacrifice himself ala R&J.
This version is far better than the BBC's, because the acting is livelier, the performance is shorter, and the "evidence" of Hero's betrayal was shown to us, which I did not see in the BBC version.
In the Wikipedia article which offers a chronology of the plays, this is attributed to 1598-9, and is 18th of the 37. Taming of the Shrew (1590-1) is 2nd (Beatrice reminds me of Kate), Romeo & Juliet (1595) is 11th, and Othello (1603-4) is 26th.

Benedick and Beatrice fight their merry war of words. But when Beatrice's friend, Hero, is humiliatingly jilted by Benedick's best friend, Claudio, Benedick has to choose which side he's on.

Stars: Cherie Lunghi (Beatrice), Katharine Levy (Hero), Jon Finch (Don Pedro), Robert Lindsay (Benedick), Robert Reynolds (Claudio), Vernon Dobtcheff (Don John), Michael Elphick (Dogberry).
The women wear lovely gowns, but they and the performances are rather stiff. Of course, I watched the Branagh version first (and again after), and this suffers by comparison. It does not help that I only recognize the actress playing Beatrice, so learning who is who was more of a chore that I'm not sure I mastered. (I also fell asleep a lot, and backtracked each time.)
This version leads me to appreciate Branagh's writing all the more. One line I caught here and doubt is in the '93 version seemed to be anti Semitic. Plus all the physical action (and the gorgeous outdoor setting) of the '93 add immensely to the understanding as well as the enjoyment of the play. I did not find anything in this version that supplemented/enhanced anything over the shorter version.

16 songs in the Soundtracks, all Performed by Elaine Stritch.

The IMDb listing has the longer time, and also lists 4 other people in the cast. What I watched had only ES onstage. The poster matches the longer dvd; the shorter has only the photo and the title.
This is very good. ES wrote a good script and/or improvises well. She has a lot of interesting life experience with which to raconteur. I won't share any stories in case I want to see this again; some of the pleasure is the surprise of hearing with whom her life intersected and how.
Her singing is good, although she has a very booze-influenced voice. The song choices match her stories well.

Watched online, blurry.
Despite its tag, this is NOT a Musical; the only songs sung were partial Christmas carols.
I'll not dignify this by adding to its IMDb info. For instance, the poster says this is based on something by D. James Kennedy, but that's not one of the writing credits. (One of the performers was someone who looked like the pulpit was his home.)
This takes place in 2001, yet the Dickens characters are dressed in wardrobe of his time; non-Dickens characters are in modern dress.
We do not get 3 dreams of Christmas past, present and future, only an imaginary trial, litigated by Marley's ghost opposing his former partner, attorney Scrooge. The issue: existence of God and the positive impact of Christianity. In addition, Marley defines Hell as knowing God's love, but having chosen to reject it during life means you've rejected it in the afterlife as well. No spoiler here: Scrooge converts. The End.
Attaching this particular sermonizing to the Dickens classic is rather deceitful, probably causing more negative ratings than this might otherwise earn. Then again, maybe this wouldn't be viewed at all without it.

I like a good heist caper, especially with no casualties. I'd seen Ocean's 11 (1960), 6 (which had tag Music), and this shares the Vegas casino robbery idea, with a lead character named Danny Ocean and 10 compatriots. Not sure that it shared much else, although I kept expecting one of the 11 to die and the ending similar to the prior film. Neither of those happened.
I was confused by the ending (where's the loot?), and had quibbles about the SWAT involvement (did AG's guy really call 911, and how did the 11 get out before they arrived?) Listening to the c.track with director SS & the writer revealed another plot gap which I won't document here.
This film is ok.

this was on the flip side of Ocean's 11.
This was written as a double/triple/more blind, not revealing what was really going on until later. So I didn't bother to accumulate plot confusions.
I'm quibbling with the synopsis writer; Danny Ocean did not recruit his wife (or any 12th member that I recall); it was MD.
This is ok, but less so with the convoluted plot. The next sequel has a slightly higher rating, but I think I'll skip it.

This movie is a recorded performance in concert. It all begins when Benjamin Barker( George Hearn), a mysterious, quiet, and subtle barber, returns to his hometown in London after escaping from a prison in Australia with help from a young sailor named Anthony. Now Sweeney Todd, he returns to his home where he and his wife Lucie and daughter Johanna used to live. When he arrives he meets Mrs. Nellie Lovett(Patti Lupone), a lonely woman who owns a down and out pie shop, and discovers that his wife has poisoned herself and the judge that unfairly punished him is responsible and the judge also has his daughter. So then Sweeney plots his revenge on the judge and his accomplice the Beadle and with help from Mrs. Lovett he re-opens his barber shop and vows to give the judge the closest shave he will ever know and give Mrs. Lovett a tasty new ingredient for her homemade meat pies.
Director: Lonny Price
Stars: George Hearn, Patti LuPone, Neil Patrick Harris.

They do have some props and wardrobe, plus head mics, so they move around the stage.
I don't like the story, don't appreciate the intended humor. The aspect I dislike is ignored by the synopsis writer: the barber and the baker routinely murder men for the meat.

Today I wasn't in the mood to stare at the screen, so I didn't absorb as much as I should, so I'll stay with my prior rating.
This is by far the best post-Fosse interpretation of his work that I know of, and that's been officially recorded. That's due to the presence of many dancers who worked directly with Fosse in the past, and especially the involvement of GV & AR.
A lot of these routines are from films. It would be fun to load up the dvd of the film and run it in parallel with these performances, especially to see how the film was edited by Fosse instead of the TV director's choices.
I often wished the costumes included white piping or socks to contrast with the black floor and background. (When they switched to a gold backdrop the costumes were also gold. Ugh.)

Cute comedy, characters, & voices. Doesn't bother me to recognize the male voices. They're well cast & performed.
Especially liked Monsieur Hood & the Merry Men; wish their dance was longer. (No mention of Mel Brooks in the c.track.)
Loved that Fiona was so capable of felling multiple men with her martial arts skills.
Disappointed by the c.track/extra features. They briefly mentioned that the incredibly expressive computer animation of faces (esp. Shrek) was attributed to prior film Antz ('98), but watching that trailer doesn't compare (and I don't want to listen to Woody Allen in that.) So maybe the advances in animation are so deeply in the bowels of programming code that the directors+producer have no stories to tell about this breakthrough. (This film took ~4 years to create.)
They (directors+producer) got very choked up when the story resolved. It did not have that effect on me.
I am glad there are more movies & I bought them; I'm ready for the saga to continue.

While I agree that this is not as good as South Pacific (1958), 8, it's still a good show and this is a decent representation of it.
I don't know if it's the print or the film itself, but this seemed a little foggy, as though we had gauze over the lens. And maybe they did: GC (b. '47) didn't look much younger than RS (b. '46), despite his song lyrics. I can see why a woman would be attracted to RS, but not why he falls for GC.
And that's what's missing all around: youthful (truthful) exuberance. RP isn't enthusiastic enough about his enterprises either. Even HC (b. '67) looks a little old to be so "heroic."
But the great music and tropical locale win the day. The lack of color filters (see '58) is a big plus.

Had I not previously rated this 6 (from my Netflix ratings), I might give this a 5 today.
I find this cluttered with too many extra characters and plotlines. While we see the chaotic attempt of Orson Welles and John Houseman to put on the titular play, we also see the WPA's theatre division being examined by Congress (Senate?) for Communist influence/productions, Nelson Rockefeller unhappy with Diego Rivera's mural featuring Stalin in the lobby of the new Rockefeller Center, Wm. Randolph Hearst and a fictitious industrialist buying art treasures from Mussolini's agent, and a struggling ventriloquist employed to teach his craft to 2 hacks. These things are loosely tied together by characters who intersect the plots. The titular play involves pro-labor sentiment, so the big theme here is the clash of art and politics, but I stand by my initial wording: cluttered.

Dir. TR did not appear in the film.

A working-class Italian-American bouncer becomes the driver of an African-American classical pianist on a tour of venues through the 1960s American South.
Director: Peter Farrelly
Stars: Viggo Mortensen, Mahershala Ali, Linda Cardellini.
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt6966692/
watched in cinema Dec 14.
No songs in the Soundtracks yet, but many are in the film credits. MA performed a few onstage (dubbed).
An excellent film, written & produced by the son of VM's character; son (b. '59) has IMDb credits dating back to '72 in acting, directing, producing, writing & more. Father also acted.
1962, 8 weeks ending Dec 24.
These 2 men are culturally divergent. The pianist lives above Carnegie Hall, and plays (pop music with an erudite twist; he's trained as a classical pianist) concerts with his trio (cello & bass); he knows nothing of popular black music (Little Richard, Aretha Franklin, etc.) The driver is a bouncer for the Copacabana nightclub, which is closed for 2 months for renovations; we see him at home putting drinking glasses in the trash after black workmen have lemonade, and he has a well-deserved reputation for being able to handle any "situation", which is what the pianist needs while touring the Deep South.
The relationship between these characters is built very gradually over the time of the tour, with lots of interesting events causing each to adapt to the other.
I will try to resist pre-ordering a disc, hopefully until they show up for a good price in the used market.

A scholarly king and his three companions swear off the society of women for three years, only to have a diplomatic visit from a French princess and her three ladies-in-waiting thwart their intentions.
Director: Elijah Moshinsky
Writer: William Shakespeare (play)
Stars: Jonathan Kent, Christopher Blake, Geoffrey Burridge, Mike Gwilym, David Warner, Paddy Navin, Maureen Lipman, Jenny Agutter.
Watched twice, between 2 viewings of the '00 film.
Note: this is one of the 9 of the BBC collection that Wikipedia notes many changes from the Oxford edition. Per the Wikipedia chronology article this is the 9th of WS's 37 plays.
We have here 5 couples: king of Navarre/princess of France, 3 of his study partners with 3 of her ladies, and a 5th Spaniard study buddy with a servant. The men have taken vows of deprivation (no women on the premises nor in their lives, fast 1 day a week and eat only once a day, sleep only 3 hours/day) to maximize their studying.
But we see little of this study, because the king must still execute his royal duties, which immediately requires he receive the princess of France, which he does 1 mile from his home, with his study partners. They each are attracted to a different woman, and 1 later sends her a missive. But it is confused by the messenger with the note the Spaniard wrote to the servant, and the French delegation reads only the missive to the servant. The servant reads the message to the princess, and takes it to the king (how is she allowed in his home?)
We get a scene where the men (in disguise as Muscovites) visit the women (also with identity concealed, and each wearing the token sent by another's suitor), so they out-trick the men. (This scene is omitted from the '00 film, but included as a dvd extra.)
By the end of the play, all the characters are gathered in the king's library for entertainment, so the Vows are defunct.
I did not warm to this production because it is a firehose of words, much of which seem only written for the display of wit (mostly of the author, supposedly for the character).

10 songs in the Soundtracks, each a production number. All are classics, mostly from the Astaire/Rogers songbook; see below.
The time/place is the verge of WWII in Europe, with newsreel footage & narration not from Shakespeare.
The musical numbers provide a welcome respite from the firehose of Shakespeare's words. I'm very amused by these actors who sing also dancing. KB personally lets loose, giving full physical expression to his body movements, hands, head and spine, not just feet. One of the men gets more dance moves than the others, but still doesn't look very slick. (I have high standards for dance.)
NL is a terrific choice for the "clown" Costard, both comedically (including his Señor Wences impression) and for the singing/dancing he contributes.
I interpret the inclusion of these songs in a Shakespeare play as giving the songwriters parity with Shakespeare, especially given the high quality of these songs.
KB must have cut quite a bit of Shakespeare text to have this run 30min faster than the play, AND include 10 production numbers and 4 newsreels.

I liked it, especially DH & the 2 female leads. Yes, DH can sing and act.
I don't know the story well, so I can't judge how faithful this is to the book or prior screen renditions. I can imagine the lots of discussion about what Stevenson intended with the dual Jekyll/Hyde: the nature of man, and the power of drugs are the 2 obvious topics.
I liked the early song where DH & fiancee sing about how well they know each other, because neither will know DH in a little while.

Interesting that Dreamworks decided to make a "more serious" version of this story, especially since the film of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat (1999), 7+ was so recent. (Also, the stage play had been running for years, per ibdb.com: 1982-3, revived 1993-4, toured also 1995-6; plus D.Osmond said he'd been performing it 5-6 years.)
The story is the same as adapted by Rice/Webber, without all the kitsch & pastiche. The 6 songs here just underline the story/characters. They were not the raison d'etre for the film.
I did not recognize any voices. (Hooray!)

Antecedent doc'y to Music of the Heart (1999), 8, which starred Meryl Streep who played the teacher shown in this doc'y.
Well done film, with very little narration. RG is shown teaching very early students, and preparing for a school concert and for the benefit concert at Carnegie Hall where her students played with 14 violin greats, including IS and Itzhak Perlman.
The MS film does a better job showing the struggles of the students, but the doc'y shows the amazing success of the students, and we know these are the real deal.
Worthwhile regular viewing with its companion film.

34 songs listed in the Soundtracks, but some are duplicates, and others are medleys. Wow, nowhere in the c.tracks did they mention Placido Domingo was the "powerhouse opera singer" they brought in to boost Jim Broadbent's singing. Otherwise the stars are not dubbed.
Love this film. Yes, it's visually frenetic, but that conveys what it would be like to attend the Moulin Rouge.
This does/provides things that I like about musicals: heightened reality (both visually and in the story), comedy/tragedy blended (with some whiplash-inducing transitions between them) including a heaping dose of farce, songs essential to the plot/story/character (too bad the dancing really only does that in the tango scene).
Love both c.tracks; I suspect BL could make a miniseries about creating this film.
The neon sign (also used by BL in Puccini: La bohème (1994), 7, here says
L'amour fou,
mad love, obsessive passion
Translated literally as “insane love,” this saying describes a wild and uncontrollable passion that takes over when people fall in love. Unlike other romantic sayings, however, an amour fou is normally a passion which has completely taken over the relationship and threatens to turn it into something unhealthy.

This is based on a novel.
Interesting story, well acted & filmed. The ending may be too H'wood. The atrocities of war are horrific, as is the toll on the local village.
Plot confusions: the woman who was hung, I think as collaborator, was she CB's sister, and why was she considered collab. Also, was CB engaged to PC or actually married.

No songs in the Soundtracks; not a Musical.
Many months ago I inquired about genres for TV episodes, especially for episodes of anthology series, specifically citing Disney and others. I got an education about genre keywords to be used on episodes; genres for episodes are blocked.
So, while WWD has many episodes that are musical, unfortunately all episodes inherit all the genres ascribed to the series: Action | Adventure | Comedy | Drama | Family | Fantasy | Musical. This episode ain't Musical, but it is Drama, Family, Fantasy.
I didn't fall asleep, but I don't get the point of this show. A 42yo father dies, having liquidated all pensions and other assets to purchase land on the titular Maine island where he was born & raised. Except his wife thinks he was born in Boston, and knows nothing of this island.
Eventually we learn that the dead father had "powers" to heal animals when he was a child, and when he tried to heal his sick mother, it failed. So he left the island to take on a new identity and leave the past behind.
I don't remember if they revealed why he went back to the island and bought the land that his aunt claimed was for the new cemetery.
KS plays a wealthy land owner on the island who's supposedly the devil, complete with tail wagging in his pants.
Not only is the print blurry, but the plot is too.

Anti-Semitism, race relations, coming of age, and fathers and sons: in Baltimore from fall, 1954, to fall, 1955. 4th Baltimore film from Levinson.
I cannot fathom the Music tag; no one writes/performs/aspires to music in any form. 4 characters attend a James Brown performance, but nothing in the plot relates to music other than a white character discovering black music. Maybe the contributor thought running a burlesque house was a music career. I'm gonna classify it as non-musical for my records, but not fight it on IMDb.
The black female character is the daughter of a physician, very uppermiddleclass. The sons of the burlesque&numbers proprietor (JM) will be the first generation of the family to go to college.
Best moment in the film: when the black drug dealer decides to take the son (BF) hostage, the physician's daughter refuses to leave him; they were on a semi-date (each took a friend to the James Brown concert to meet there; her father doesn't want her seeing a white boy). This moment was doubled down when the dealer demands the son grab her breast.
In the featurette, BL confirms the sign at the swimming pool "no Jews, no dogs, no colored people" was factual. This film has several incidents of American antisemitism.
Although this is a topic of interest to me, the film makes me shrug. The extra feature of interviews with cast and director is brief and unsatisfying.

G | 1h 15min | Animation, Drama, Family | 1 March 2001
It's a high-flying adventure when Louie, a mute trumpeter swan, is given the gift of a trumpet, and finds his voice.
Directors: Terry L. Noss, Richard Rich
Stars: Jason Alexander, Mary Steenburgen, Reese Witherspoon.
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0206367/
Watched online, mediocre print.
5 songs in the Soundtracks.
At the beginning, when the swans hatched, they were named Ella, Billie and Louie, meaning Fitzgerald, Holiday and Armstrong, but the naming was based on the signets' voices, except the male's, who is mute.
So the film delves into solutions for the muteness, because this is how swans woo a mate.
Louie realizes humans read and write, so he goes off to school to learn, and comes back with a chalk tablet around his neck, but of course the other swans don't read, so that was pointless.
The father seeks a device for his son to make sound, and takes a trumpet from a music shop. Afterward he realizes it was theft, so he feels guilty. Louie learns to play the trumpet, and earns enough $$ to pay for it and the damage to the store.
I recognized JA and MS as the parents. The father was pretty obnoxious, and I see JA when I hear him. MS was more tolerable.
I can't say that I was awake for the whole thing. Not worth a second view.

I miss the old days when musicals were aimed at adults, not at children or teens.
This is ok, no more than that.
Odd that the antecedent ('55) was not a musical. However, during the closing credits, they sing a new rendition of Bella Notte, a song from that film.

Version of Here Comes Mr. Jordan (1941) and Heaven Can Wait (1978), perhaps my favorite, but I need to see the '78 version again. (I rated the '41 version 5, and remember disliking it. Not sure if it was just Robert Montgomery or why.)
One of my favorite moments: when CR gets his 3rd body and tries to hail a cab, gets passed several times, and realizes - joyously - that's he's a black man again.

A Los Angeles Rams quarterback, accidentally taken away from his body by an overanxious angel before he was meant to die, returns to life in the body of a recently murdered millionaire.
Directors: Warren Beatty, Buck Henry
Writers: Elaine May (screenplay), Warren Beatty (screenplay), Harry Segall (based upon a play by), Robert Towne (uncredited).
Stars: Warren Beatty, James Mason, Julie Christie, Jack Warden, Charles Grodin, Dyan Cannon, Buck Henry.
I like this, but I like the '01 version better. Because CR is a comedian, we get a little more overt comedy. Also, it was that much more striking that he didn't bed his love interest, if only because of the more lascivious times.
I also caught RK looking as though she was in love more than JC. And I liked the fact that we saw what the millionaire looked like, to remind us with whom the love was blooming.
Other than the change of profession (comedian versus quarterback), the story is the same.

No songs listed in the Soundtracks, and none in the film are familiar (except an approximation of Hooray for Hollywood).
Rated 8 on 2015-02-03, I'll leave it there today. But I have some quibbles.
The film covers a lot of years (1916-49; BR lived 1878-1949, so from BR being 38-71), and GH (1946-2003) looks at least his real age (55). They age him well, but he looks too old for the early portion.
My biggest quibble is that, despite an obvious amount of hard work, GH does not embody Robinson's style. Of course, I'm a BR aficionado, having noticed such a small detail as BR's open-palms when he puts hands on hips (GH doesn't quite do it).
IMDb trivia: ""Bojangles" was a left foot lead tap dancer, whereas Gregory Hines was a right foot lead tap dance. Hines had to learn tap with his left foot first, which is highlighted at the end of the movie when there is a side-by-side comparison of the two doing "Bojangles" specialty, the dancing staircase." [clip from Harlem is Heaven ('32) in end credits; GH version appears also in ch5.]
I love that GH tried to recreate BR's style, and the side-by-side staircase footage, where he replicated the '32 footage tap for tap and cut for cut is amazing. But BR has a buoyancy about him that GH's low center of gravity, physicality and demeanor resists. Of course, no other dancer could have done better and done the acting, and was a big enough star to get the film made.
Added the 7 (of 14 made by Robinson) movies mentioned/recreated in the film to IMDb Connections.

SLJ is shown playing piano a few times, supposedly some were his compositions.
Music is a vehicle to get SLJ things, including clothing and being invited to the home of a suspected killer.
But the film is consumed with finding the killer, augmented by ravings and hallucinations of the "detective", our mentally ill cave dweller. It's very weird trying to distinguish what is useful information that SLJ is collecting, and what is just lunacy. By the time we got the solution, I didn't know who the murderer was or why he did it. I think I had given up the chase.

Meh remake of the story. Nice to see a female lead for a change, but it just made me wonder why we don't have a masculine word for b!tch. I did like that her name was Ebony Scrooge, and her dead singing partner was Marli Jacob.
The transformation was extreme, where she decides to buy dozens of very expensive concert tickets and offer flights to the concert as well, plus flying Timmy and mom to NYC to visit a specialist, with fancy hotel on her too. Was Ebenezer this extravagant?

MV gives his perspective on the issue, illustrated with film clips. Unfortunately, he only gives screen credit to studios/archives in a group at the end, not to specific actors. So on IMDb, many of the actors shown are not credited, despite white actors who get less screen time being listed. Among the missing: the Nicholas Brothers, Willie Best, Mantan Moreland, Paul Robeson, Bill Robinson, Herb Jeffries. At least I thought I saw all these here. Maybe next time I'll capture some names and try to submit them. But to prove MV's point, some of the white actors credited are names I don't know, from the era that I know well.

Good thing I bought a copy of this years ago; it costs more now that when it was new.
I didn't rate this when I first saw it, but it made a big impression on me. Possibly the most powerful portion today is the gallery of images/clips of real past images of blackface/piccaninnies and the (mostly mechanical) dolls of that ilk. There's just nothing positive about it, and it's not made up.
The poster image is no exaggeration; that's how the characters painted their faces, with real burnt cork and lipstick.
I find it strange that, although we get plenty of images of Mantan Moreland to connect the SG character name on the show with its roots, no mention is made of Willie Best, who has the nickname Sleep 'n' Eat for some of his films 1930-5, and is the name of TD's character on the show within the film.
SL in the c.track and the featurette points out the references to Network ('76): twice we get SG telling people to open their windows and yell what they're mad about, and we get a live broadcast of a murder. He also relates this film to Sunset Blvd. ('50), A Face In the Crowd ('57) and The Producers ('67).
I contributed the Sunset Blvd item to the Connections page, and this Trivia item: "Per the commentary track, director Spike Lee viewed the documentary Classified X (1998) prior to starting this film, and called upon its researcher/associate producer, Judy Aley to research the archival images used in this film." I'm gonna watch that doc'y next.

I just watched You've Got Mail ('98), saw there was a musical version, and found this.
I don't know how much of my neutrality is the poor quality of the print, and how much this invokes the 1940 film. When it invokes the film, it misses some of the things I liked (the salesclerk who feels inferior but friendly, Felix Bressart; the charm of J.Stewart), and makes worse some that I did not (the story; M.Sullavan). And I don't like the cast at all. I'm not a fan of Frank Morgan in the 1940 film, but I like him better than the shop owner here.
It feels like they musicalized some things just to add songs to the show. The errand boy gets a song. The smarmy salesclerk (J.Schildkraut in the film) gets one or two of his own. The salespeople sing to a customer as they leave to call again (that would prevent me from returning).
Well, there's a B'way revival recorded in 2016 that PBS has online, so we'll see how I feel then.

Completing the MR trifecta of When Harry Met Sally ('89) and Sleepless in Seattle ('93); more info in these notes. Sleepless was my favorite of the 3 from these recent viewings, and this is second.
Remake of The Shop Around the Corner (1940, dir. Lubitsch), In the Good Old Summertime (1949, dir. Leonard) and She Loves Me (1978) (TV Movie of a London stage musical).
But instead of unknowingly working in the same place (they correspond by email instead of letter), they work at rival companies: she owns a children's bookstore, he owns a megastore about to open Around the Corner from her store.
We are just early enough that Amazon is not yet a presence. (I remember my first order from Amazon was '98, and, looking it up, was a book and a cd.) On the c.track, they do mention the war of the bookstores, that a small store had been consumed by a larger store, which was subsequently consumed by a chain store. (We skip the middle step in the film.) So my point is that they're not ready to complete the cycle with the online store consuming the chain (remember Waldenbooks/Brentano's/Borders? Wow, Borders folded in '11; doesn't feel that long ago.)
The access to the internet still has squawky dial-up sound, without seeing a modem. They're typing on laptops, but no fancy graphics onscreen.
N.Ephron co-wrote with sister Delia (who also co-wrote '93's Sleepless), with origin credit to the Hungarian playwright source of all these other films/plays.
By getting the extra storyline of the bookstore wars, we get a much richer film than the original, where the characters just irritate each other at work. Of course, there I don't like the female lead (Margaret Sullavan) despite the appeal of Jimmy Stewart, and appreciating Lubitsch.
My rating scheme is weird (as I've said before). I needed to give this a higher rating than Harry...Sally (7), but don't feel the affection to give it a plus. So 8- feels better.

NOT a musical. Thought about skipping it, but then again maybe it lives up to its rating. Not for me.
It's not strictly kiddie korb, but it's David Spade in Spades, and I'm not a fan. JG and PW were also extremely recognizable voices, which I don't like. Oddly, EK was by far the least "herself" among these 4 stars, and maybe if she'd been more recognizable, I would have liked it a little more.
This emperor is self-absorbed in a modern way, despite the "ancient" setting (not sure where we're supposed to be). Amazing that JG persists in rescuing him, because it seemed highly likely DS would still destroy JG's village to build his summer home. Of course, this being Disney, DS finally reformed in the final scene.
Mercifully shortish, I didn't get time to really work up a grudge against this. But I can't imagine watching it again.

We saw the band onstage with instruments, but I got more from their hair and clothes about what their style of music must be than by hearing them perform, meaning that I don't remember hearing them much.
KH is a "bandaid", better than a groupie b/c she loves the music, not just fame. She's having a longish-term affair with married bandmate BC.
PF (b. '82) is the 15yo HS senior, about to graduate, but progressive mom lets him pursue this interview for Rolling Stone. He stays on the road with the band a lot longer than intended.
We get lots of betrayal/loyalty, and coming of age, but in a far different way than most 15yo's, of course.
PF witnesses a lot of typical rock band behavior, and KH od's when she's shunned by the band b/c BC will meet up with his wife in the next city.
PF writes his article, but BC denies it all when the fact-checker calls, even though the band was to be on the cover.
Later BC recants, apologizes to KH, asks to see her, but the address she gives is for PF.
The article goes forward, cover and all. The End.
The story is interesting to see what would happen, but I can't imagine wanting to see it again. Good performances, likeable actors, it's just not my subject area.
Rated 7.9 (230,603)
Columbia & more, dir. Crowe; 6
