The Gene Kelly Show (1959), 6 b/w, fs (TV)

Gene Kelly's first TV special finds him dancing with three European ballerinas; performing with two youngsters, Liza Minnelli & Cherylene Lee from "Flower Drum Song;" and dancing to a Carl Sandburg's "A Poem To Dance To," written for this show. Nelson Riddle contributes an original composition called "Jam Session" which serves as a production number.

Watched online, blurry print.

I imagine that in the days before home video, it could be thrilling to see GK on your home TV.

I don't think the poor print is obscuring my view of the dances, just the pleasures of how it might have looked in color (which IMDb does not list as how this was b'cast.) I find the choreography shrug-worthy, especially given this is GK.

At one point he does a challenge dance with himself, and the tech is good (the set is just one backdrop with repeating panels, nothing so complex as in Cover Girl ('44)), but that's pretty calm too. I think the problem is he sang live, so he couldn't afford to dance to strenuously.

The 3 ballerinas didn't impress me, but again, that's a choreography issue.
