Previously rated 7 on 2015-05-07. Bumped to 8 after seeing the sequel, which is also recommended, but purely as information.
The first film used a device of telling some of the personal stories motivating AG on this quest. Not only his college professor's revelations, but truly personal things like his 6 yo son's car accident and a relative's fatal lung cancer. These made things more engaging.
Also, oddly enough, seeing AG's presentation being given on a giant screen, and coming back to that venue, gave the story more coherence as well.
The second film didn't have either of those, and showed an event that felt suspicious: AG calling the head of Solar City to propose he give away some of his technology to India. We only saw AG's side of the conversation, and my cynicism kicked in, wondering if events were actually as portrayed. (Apparently SC did agree to give India some technology contingent on their agreeing to the Paris Accord.)
It was very scary to watch the first film and realize we're 12 years from that, and have taken several giant steps backward, while the storms and floods and droughts and fires just get worse.
