Alimony (1949), 6-

A promising young composer is tempted away from his devoted wife by a fortune-seeking woman who cares more for his prospects than for him.
Director: Alfred Zeisler

Watched online. Ok print for small screen.

Only 3 songs in the Soundtracks, sung by either MV or JB. I would never nominate this for Music genre; too little music is performed.

Interesting plot: Girlfriends snare a well-off husband to quickly divorce him and collect alimony. Seems like there'd be more $$ if you stayed, and certainly more alimony if you stayed longer. Spoiler alert: both women get justice under the Hayes Code (Production Office).

I did follow too closely while the marital statuses were discussed/changing. The composer did NOT begin the film married. He had a gf living in the same boarding house with him and others. Then his agent announced he'd sold his musical show, and the gold digger conquered him, so he broke up with gf. But shortly after he learned the deal fell through, and gold digger dropped him. He did marry the former gf at some point (she got pregnant), but rejoined with gold digger to develop a hit song with her name and ideas (why not co-writer credit?), so she stole him away? But when that well ran dry, she dumped him again, and he went back to the gf/wife.

The other mildly interesting aspect of the plot: we see the gold digger get into a serious car accident at the start of the film, and her estranged father comes to the composer looking for the daughter; he saw her photo on the sheet music. Neither know about the accident yet. And the film returns to father/composer talk every so often to remind us the bulk of the film is a flashback, and we may be satisfying dad's search.

It's a 6- because I don't care about the people. None of the faces are familiar. None of the characters are likeable. The sets and costumes are drab. This screams Poverty Row, and it's not even a Studio on PR. Orbit produced 2 films '48/9 and 2 in '58/9; that's all folks. (Eagle/Lion distributed dozens of films, but only produced 1 in '48.)
